Pablo Picasso @ MET

"Neither is there figurative and non-figurative art. All things appear to us in the shape of forms. Even in metaphysics ideas are expressed by forms, well them think how absurd it would be to think of painting without the imagery of forms. A figure, an object, a circle, are forms; they affect us more or less intensely."

Paul Gaugin @ MET

"No one wants my painting because it is different from other people's — peculiar, crazy public that demands the greatest possible degree of originality on the painter's part and yet won't accept him unless his work resembles that of the others!"

Paul Cezanne @ MET

"Painting from nature is not copying the object, it is realizing sensations."

Vincent Van Gogh @ MET

"Just slap anything on when you see a blank canvas staring you in the face like some imbecile. You don't know how paralyzing that is, that stare of a blank canvas is, which says to the painter, You can't do a thing. The canvas has an idiotic stare and mesmerises some painters so much that they turn into idiots themselves. Many painters are afraid in front of the blank canvas, but the blank canvas is afraid of the real, passionate painter who dares and who has broken the spell of 'you can't' once and for all. "

Leonardo Da Vinci The Annunciation @ The Uffizi Galllery in Florence, Italy.

Dwight Williams

I met Dwight Williams yesterday at the MET.  I saw him from a distance from the 2nd floor and noticed he had some folks taking pictures of him while he was drawing.  I went down and spoke with him briefly. I asked him how long he's been drawing for and he replied, "my whole life."  He told me that he sells his drawing for $95 dollars which is quite the bargain for a master drawing.  I can't wait to bump into him again. Seems like we worship folks with no talent but running into one who's got it was quite the inspiration.
